How to use Google Docs as a cloud to stream video to your iPhone

If any of you use Google Docs you already know that Google allows you to upload any file you want to it. Not all files can be viewed on the iPhone using the mobile interface (safari). One thing that Google has recently added is ability to stream videos from your Google Docs to your computer.  It uses the same technology and player as YouTube so therefore it allows for actual streaming and not simply downloading the whole file all at once.
You might also know that natively Safari cannot open AVI or any other file format except QuickTime and MP4 files. If you navigate to your Google Docs account via Safari and click on a video file in MP4/Apple native format it will begin to stream!!!

(It might say something about the antivirus scan not being able to scan the file, so just click Download Anyway and it will begin to stream.

Now you got your small personal cloud where you can upload a bunch of videos (or mp3s) and stream them right to your iPhone using either 3G or WiFi.

Google limits the amount of free space for your Google Docs to 1GB. This might not be a lot. What I have done, is that I signed up for extra storage.
For $5/year you get a whooping 20GB of storage space. That’s a lot of space for practically nothing!

The only thing that I would like to add is that Google Docs does not re-encode files on the fly as it only stores them so if you upload a file in super high quality that is huge in file size it might take a long time to stream over 3G.
I would recommend encoding your video files with less bitrate and playing with settings on your video encoder, therefore allowing for faster streaming with less buffering.

Shattered iPhone 4 screen

So… its been a while since I posted anything on my blog ( I apologize about that) but here is something. I broke my iPhone 4’s screen!
I dropped it on the concrete and the screen simply shattered. This happened about 5 days ago and I’m still debating if I want to get it fixed professionally or if I would want to do it myself.
Pro repair will cost anywhere between $150-$199 and fixing it by myself would cost about $68 or so but there is always a huge risk of messing the phone up…

Another solution that I’ve been giving some thought recently is getting a new phone. For the last couple of months I’ve been kind of obsessed with the Samsung Galaxy S II. It is not out in US as of yet but it is available in Europe. Samsung is actually going to announce it tonight (8/30/11) so I can’t wait to see how much it is going to cost. I am not available for an upgrade until next year so I would have to buy the device at full price :(

AT&T Detected my unauthorized tethering

So after little over a year of Tethering on my phone I finally received a text message from AT&T regarding the unauthorized tethering.
For over a year I’ve been using TetherMe tweak from Cydia which allows you to use native tethering on your iPhone 3G and iPhone 4 without paying additional fees.
I think the reason why they found out was my very high data usage in the last two months (about 5GB or more ) a month compared to my regular data usage of about 4GB.

From what I’ve seen online, this txt msg is followed by an email telling you about different plan options for tethering (fucking expensive!!!!) and how your unlimited data plan (which I have) will be replaced with a 4GB tethering plan or something like that. I got the txt from AT&T yesterday but I still haven’t received the email…at least not yet.
I’ll post updates as stuff happens.

XBMC for iOS

So I was just browsing Cydia to see what's new since I've been busy for the last few days. After scrolling through pages of shitty themes etc , I stumbled upon this gem, XBOX Media Center (XBMC)!!

This was very exciting to me as I am a huge fan and a dedicated user of this wonderful Windows Media Center replacement on my computer.

Anyways, off I go to play with this app :)
I'll post updates and my review of it after few days of using it.

Here is a screen shot of XBMC running on my iPhone 4

Manage photos on your iPhone

I am a lazy person when it comes to syncing my phone with iTunes and managing all my photos. It's a pain in the ass to tell you the truth. Finally there is an app /tweak on Cydia that allows you to create albums and move photos and videos between those albums right on your iPhone without a need to sync. I bought this app about a month ago and it's worth every penny !! ( I believe I paid either 1.99 or 2.99 for it)
The app is called PhotoAlbums+

And this is what it looks like on my phone

Great case to protect your iPhone 4 for under $10

I've had this case for about 2 months now. Got it off of ebay for like $8 including shipping. The seller now has the deal for $6 including shipping. Get it now. Great case and so much better than the iPhone bumper for $30. iPhone bumper sucks, it won't allow most of the 3rd party chargers to plug in to the phone, i had to dremel the shit out of the case and eventually i found this case to be MUCH BETTER than the stupid iPhone bumper which i got for free after buying the iphone 4. I would NEVER, EVER, buy a piece of plastic at that price! Fucking rip off!!!!

Launch Camera app from your lock screen with a volume button

There are few apps on Cydia that allow you to take a picture in the camera app with just a press of a button. This apps main purpose is to do the same but it has an extra feature which I've been wanting for a while now... Launching the camera app using a hardware button from the lockscreen. This app makes it happen. A lot of times I've wanted to take a quick picture but I couldn't do it in time because I had to unlock the phone, then find the camera app. With this up I can just press and hold volume button while on the lock screen and camera app launches. Perfect. I recommend this nice tweak to anyone that wants to take a quick picture without all the hassle.
